There is no doubt that many of us recognise the signs Castle Hill as being picturesque. The striking and imposing black towers which dominate the hill were once for many centuries the centre of political and social power in Britain. For many generations of visitors have still been able to see, and indeed to take part in, the daily events which are part and parcel of the lives of the residents of this delightful little town. Although the seat of power in many centuries may have changed, this beautiful spot has retained its position as the most significant point of all history for those people who want a glimpse of what life was like not so long ago.
Today there are also tours of the famous old castle, to be found within the grounds of the building itself. These allow you to get a real sense of the day-to-day events which occurred there during its time of dominance and indeed to find out just how the castle was defended against the heaviest and most determined attacks. There are also several interesting period paintings which provide insights into the life of the people who once lived here. All in all, Castle Hill really does offer an excellent opportunity for anyone who wants to experience some of the history of a bygone era.
If you’re interested in seeing the signs, it’s important to note that the best times to go are in the spring, from March to May, or between September and October, when the battle is held. Of course, there are other signs of the famous castle beyond these dates too. Regardless of when you visit, you’ll soon discover that there is much to see and do in the lovely historic town of East Anglia.
